A 14-YEAR-OLD is recovering after being seriously assaulted by a gang of youths at the weekend.

Local Sinn Féin councillor, Karina Carlin, revealed this week that she had been contacted by the boy's mother after he was set upon in Strabane town centre.

His distressed mother had asked Cllr Carlin to bring the shocking incident to the public's attention to warn other parents and young people.

It is understood that the teenager was set upon by a number on youths on Sunday evening within the vicinity of Castle Place.

Men from a nearby public house came to his aid before his assailants pursued him across Abercorn Square to a pizzeria where a local taxi man intervened and took him home.

The culprits are not believed to be from the town. The boy required hospital treatment and further tests including X-rays as he had been experiencing severe pains to his head, Cllr Carlin said.

He is believed to have sustained a broken nose as a result of the frenzied attack.

"He got kicked in the face and we won't know until the swelling goes down if his nose is broken.

"It's a disgrace this town is getting worse. There was blood everywhere from my son," the mother said in a statement issued through Cllr Carlin on Monday.

The local councillor described the incident as a "sustained attack" which only stopped when adults stepped in to help.

Cllr Carlin who has remained in contact with the family has wished the youngster a speedy recovery.

"This was obviously a very traumatic event for the young lad and his family and I hope he has a full recovery from his injuries.

"I pay tribute to the actions of the customers at Dixies Bar who intervened to stop the attack and especially to the taxi driver who got him to safety," she said.

She added: "This highlights the dangers of young people with excessive amounts of alcohol and street violence which can have such terrible consequences."
