STRABANE Academy girls hockey seconds took Carrickfergus Grammar in the Ulster Plate on Monday, and came away with a narrow but deserved 1-0 win.

STRABANE ACADEMY II...1
CARRICKFERGUS GRAMMAR II...0

A frozen pitch at Carrickfergus this saw the game moved to the Meadow Bank Sports Arena, Magherafelt, in what would be a first for the Academy girls to play on an indoor pitch and the only indoor venue in Northern Ireland.

Right from the whistle the Strabane Academy girls gave 100 per cent commitment and desire, matching their opponents every step of the way.

In a game that was end to end the better chances came the way of Carrickfergus but keeper Catherine Mehaffy was up to the challenge making some exceptional saves.

Sterling work from the back line marshalled by sweeper Hannah McLaughlin and the midfield ensured that the majority of the threat from Carrickfergus was nullified.

With the score line 0-0 at half time the girls knew their efforts would need to increase as Carrickfergus were determined to come away with the win, and using their multiple substitutions and changing formation and runners.

Hannah McLaughlin and Dharma Darragh were equally determined though not to concede a goal and despite the pressure which resulted in a few short corners the Strabane defence held tight and provided a platform for the midfield to move the ball quickly forward.

The more potent attack in the second half came from the Academy girls. Sarah Black was denied on several occasions by an in form Carrick keeper. 16 minutes into the second half Carrickfergus were again repelled with the ball breaking to Hannah Moore.

Carrying the ball to the half way line Hannah Moore turned her opponent twice before delivering an excellently weighted through pass to centre forward Sarah Black.

With the Carrickfergus defence scrambling to recover and under considerable pressure from the Carrickfergus sweeper Sarah Black wrong-footed the keeper and flicked the ball into the far corner of the goal to put the Academy girls 1-0 up.

Carrickfergus threw everything at the Academy defence which remained resolute and provided a platform for additional attacks by Strabane, who ended up worthy winners at the final whistle.
