ROUND three of the Northwest DTL League's Winter Series took place at Shanaghey Shooting ground on Friday last.

Indeed it turned out to be a real feast of shooting as the host club held an Open 15-Bird Re-Entry Shoot which started immediately after the league business had all been sorted.

As hosts, Shanaghey squad 1 shot first, and with PJ Gallen, Bertie Coulter, Dermott Mimnagh, Harry Knox and Tommy Cunningham in their ranks, they posted an impressive score of 119/348 during a period of poor light and swirling winds. Gallen, Mimnagh and Cunningham all posted 25/74s which, despite being decent scores, left the door ajar for someone to nip in with a 75 for High Gun on the day.

Shanaghey squad 2 were next the take the challenge with the weather showing no signs of improving. Cathal Connolly was their top scorer on the day with the remainder of the team made up of Michael Gallen, Tony Dornan, Niall McCullagh and John Porter.

Raphoe squad 1 were next on the line. Their team consisted of Mark Barnett, Anthony Kelly, Brian Barnett, Fintan Kilpatrick and Gearoid Driver. Driver went closest to a 'possible' scoring 24/72, again in poor conditions.

Raphoe squad 2 followed and returned a fine score of 111/328. David Scott showed that he is starting to regain some of his old form with an impressive 25/73. He was supported well by team-mate Tom McHugh who scored an even better 25/74 to equal the earlier scores of the top Shanaghey Guns.John Johnston, Philip McDaid and Roy Parke all did well to complete the team.

With a slight improvement starting to show in the weather Inver/Donegal took to the stands. David McGroary, PJ Kelly, Damien Kelly, Tommy Love and David Henry all shot well with the Kellys both returning 72s in a squad total of 112/326.

Conor Kiverigan with a 73 top scored for Killybegs who followed their South Donegal neighbours. The team included Christopher Milsop Jr and Sr, Michael Boyle and Chris Joyce. Their tally was 112/327. The Ardara Squad of Brian Moore, Thomas Given, James Melly, Frankie Gallagher and David Classon completed the squads with Moore scoring best.

Eight Individuals then shot for the Individual High Gun of the day and to record scores for the overall High Gun of the Series. The most notable of these was Jens Bach who returned a 25/74. As no one achieved a possible on the day this was good enough to see Bach into the High Gun shoot-off with Gallen, Mimnagh, Cunningham and McHugh.

Unfortunately Jens had gone before the shoot-off and only four guns took their place in the decider. Tommy Cunningham had to rely on his second barrel on three occasions, but it never let him down and he took the specially commissioned badge with a 25/72. Round four of the series takes place in Ardara on Sunday, January 14. Squad times will be posted in the local media later this week.

Open 15-Bird Re-Entry Shoot Over 50 Guns attended Shanaghey Shooting Ground on Friday last with almost 40 remaining for this test of man and gun. 22 Lines were shot and the shoot-off took place under the grounds Floodlights.

Ardara's Thomas Given was the only man able to record a 15/45 possible and he did it twice just for good measure. It left PJ Gallen, Cathal Connolly, Christy Milsop Sr, James Browne and David Scott to shoot for second and third places.

Gallen came out on top followed by Milsop.

Fintan Kilpatrick took the junior Prize. The presentations, made by ground proprietor Michael Gallen, brought the curtain down on a great days sport at the West Tyrone venue.
