Bonus point win for Strabane over Newry. thumbnail Strabane and Newry lock together for a scrum.

STRABANE secured a bonus point win over an extremely tough Newry team, who travelled to the Derry Road Campus determined to overturn their hosts in front of their home supporters.

Tries from Norman Lindsay, Christopher Robinson and a brace from James Perry with Ruairi Lynch kicking the conversions ensured all five points went to the home side in a 26-10 win.

Previous encounters with Newry suggested that this would be a real battle up front for the Strabane pack and this proved to be the case with the first penalty of the game awarded to Newry from a usually dominant Strabane scrum.

Newry used they heavy pack for a lot of their play but the Strabane defence held firm with good tackling that lead to a penalty against Newry on the Strabane five metre line.

Strabane finally got their game plan up and running with Steven Torrens and Gordon Baird making good yards carrying the ball. This eventually left the Newry flanks exposed and Norman Lindsey crossing over for the first score.

Good work from the restart allowed Colin Campbell to break down the wing with Christopher Robinson pouncing on a loose ball to add Strabane's second score. Newry brought themselves back into the game with a try and converted penalty of their own to leave it 14-10 at half time with all to play for.

The rain made the ball very slippery in hand resulting in a significant number of scrums in the second half. Both sides tested each other's defence with neither side giving into the pressure.

Finally, some dancing feet from James Perry broke through the Newry defence to score Strabane's third. Perry again used his pace to secure the bonus point with five minutes to go.

The game finished 26-10 to the home side.

Strabane Firsts are away to Cavan this Saturday while Strabane Devels are away to Derry City in the cup.

Training continues Tuesday night at Newtownstewart 3G pitch and Thursday nights in Clady commencing 8pm both nights.

Mini and Youth Rugby continues Saturday at 10am at Strabane Cricket Club, costing 1 per child.
