Police warning over ‘reckless’ scrambler driving at Baronscourt. thumbnail The local PSNI and officials at Baronscourt Estate have joined forces to highlight the dangers of reckless scrambler and quad driving in the wake of recent incidents.

POLICE are working with the Baronscourt Estate, Newtownstewart, to warn of dangers of using scramblers in and around the area.

Inspector Alison Ferguson said: "Police are aware of local concerns about people riding scramblers and quads recklessly. So, we are reminding people that we will take action to curb the nuisance and dangers associated with the use of off-road scramblers and quads in public areas.

"The use of motorised vehicles as a leisure activity can be both exciting and fun. However, if used inappropriately, they can be dangerous and illegal in some circumstances.

"Quads, and some scramblers, do not comply with Construction and Use regulations and Vehicle Safety Standards and therefore are restricted to "off-road" use only. This does not mean they can be driven anywhere "off-road". These vehicles should only be driven on private land where the landowner has given permission and should not be driven on pavements, roads, public property or parks; this includes green grass areas and public paths.

"Riders must be aware of the minimum requirements by law, such as insurance and safety equipment that must be complied with in order to drive these vehicles legally.

"We are working with our colleagues in the PSNI's Air Support Unit to monitor the area." Matt Stuart, Baronscourt Estate, said, "The safety of those involved and other members of the public is constantly in our minds and we have been seriously concerned for some time about the potential for serious injuries posed by misuse of scramblers."
