A LOCAL priest has described a concert at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Strabane by 'The Priests' as "truly memorable".

The classical musical group comprising of brothers, Fr Eugene and Fr Martin O'Hagan with Fr David Delargy, performed at the iconic building last Thursday night with parishioners and fans from near and far packed into the Barrack Street church for the evening.

The concert was held as part of church's bid to raise 100,000 to carry out repair works. The church - which was built in 1895 - needs immediate work to its stained glass windows on the baptistery side and the surrounding stonework as well as the stonework on the front of the building.

In a bid to raise the money for the repairs, the parish council began the Church Restoration Fund with the aim of raising the money to facilitate the work.

The fund is expected to be given a huge boost thanks to the concert. According to the latest update, the fund has almost reached its target with 62,881 and 7,765 raised to date.

Speaking this week, Rev Declan Boland, Camus parish priest, said he was delighted to host The Priests adding that the night will live long in the memory of those lucky enough to experience it.

"What a wonderful evening we had on Thursday as The Priests entertained us with song and humour. It was a truly memorable night, never to be forgotten," he said.

"They remarked more than once on the warmth and spirit of the people and were very impressed by the level of preparation. They themselves thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

"A hearty thank-you to one and all who made the concert such an outstanding success. As part of an ongoing fund-raising operation to help in the Church Restoration scheme, it was a major event."

Fr Boland said there were many people to thank for the success of the event: "We were very proud of the contribution made by our own choir under Ryan s (Quinn) leadership and they too were outstanding.

"Without the expertise and guidance of Joe Gallagher, the promoter of The Priests it would not have been possible.

"We owe Joe and many others a great debt of gratitude, especially John McGuinness who was in charge of the stage and lighting effects. Brian and his team in St Patrick s Hall pulled out every stop also.

Well done everyone!"
