Gas pipeline work continuing on Railway Street thumbnailWork to lay pipeline as part of the major Gas to the West project is continuing on Railway Street in the town centre. Motorists have been advised of a one-lane closure and to expect delays.

MOTORISTS have been warned to expect delays as construction work to lay a new gas pipeline is scheduled to continue in Railway Street over the coming weeks as part of the 'Gas to the West' development in the Strabane area.

David Butler, head of Engineering with SGN Natural Gas, explained: "The process over the coming weeks involves working with reinforced concrete which makes reinstatement a more time-consuming task.

"This involves pouring concrete and waiting to set before tar can be reinstated. We are however committed to leaving each area we work in as we have found it, hence the slower than expected progress in this instance."

He continued: "While it is difficult to put specific timelines on this piece of work, we estimate that we will complete approximately 30 metres of pipeline per week, a drop in our output to date. We are of course committed to continuing our regular engagement with all of our stakeholders and will provide updates as soon as is practicably possible."

Mr Butler added that SGN Natural Gas and its contractors, McNicholas, greatly appreciated the ongoing co-operation from the public and local businesses in Strabane during the significant development works to bring natural gas to the area.

A one-way system will remain in place in Railway Street to facilitate traffic approaching the town centre. Motorists are asked to observe the diversion signs via John Wesley Street and Lower Main Street an, the temporary traffic lights in place during the lane closure in Railway Street.

Strabane is the first of eight main towns to benefit from the 250m Gas to the West infrastructure project which is scheduled to supply gas mains and metres to 40,000 customers in Counties Tyrone, Derry and Fermanagh over the next 40 years.

Anyone with specific queries in relation to the ongoing work in Railway Street, is asked to engage directly with SGN Natural Gas to ensure their questions are being addressed.
