Thursday, 7 September 2017

LOCAL people are reminded that they have just over one week left to give their feedback on the draft Inclusive Strategic Growth Plan - the Community Plan - for the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

The public consultation on the document, which is a blueprint for all future growth and development across the council district, will end at midnight on September 15.

Community Planning is a new power which passed to local councils under the Review of Public Administration, aimed at empowering communities, enhancing public service delivery and generally improving the well-being of all local citizens.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, councillor Maolíosa McHugh, has urged everyone to take the opportunity to read the strategy which will impact on all aspects of life for local citizens.

"The Strategic Growth Plan is an extremely important document as it presents an exciting opportunity to entirely transform the North West region for the better," he stressed.

"We've been delighted at the level of engagement from all our statutory partners and the public to date, demonstrating the widespread commitment to achieving positive change.

"This new power offers the chance to address many historic issues, and to take a fully inclusive approach to achieving sustainable growth and development of our region which will drive things forward.

"I would urge everyone to take this opportunity to read the draft strategy, which is the result of many months of engagement and research, and consider how it will affect you."

Working with a wide range of statutory agencies and the public, council will adhere to the objectives and outcomes identified in the Strategic Inclusive Growth Plan, which will be reviewed every four years.

Council chief executive, John Kelpie, said all feedback would assist in shaping a robust and sustainable approach to strategic growth for the district.

"As we near the conclusion of this consultation we are already reviewing the growth strategy taking into account any additional recommendations highlighted throughout this 12 week process.

"We want the plan to reflect the aspirations of all our citizens, and draw on the experiences of the people who live and work here as the solid foundation for our strategy.

"Work has already begun towards achieving the ambitious outcomes and objectives identified in the draft plan, and your contribution will help us ensure its success."
