'Boy racers' causing late night havoc at Canal Basin

Thursday, 3 August 2017

'BOY racers' have been causing havoc at the Canal Basin area of the town, it has been claimed this week.

According Sinn Fein MLA., Michaela Boyle, a number of 'boy racers' have been congregating at the site late at night causing loud noise and disruption for nearby residents.

Condemning the behaviour Ms Boyle, said: I have received numerous complaints from local residents about the screeching of tyres late at night and large crowds congregating in cars to race.

This reckless behaviour is waking young children and elderly out of their sleep in the middle of the night and is occurring on a regular basis. On Monday night alone this went on until 3.30am.

I am calling on those responsible to stop and actually think of what they are doing to these families. Children have also been witnessed videoing these cars in the evenings doing doughnuts and racing which is a major health and safety concern.

I have been in contact with the council and have asked them to consider erecting a barrier to block cars from entering which they are going to discuss. I am also meeting with the PSNI this Friday and will be raising this issue with them."

She added: My advice to those involved is that it's time to wise up and stop tormenting these families with this childish behaviour immediately."
