Stone-throwing at car had potential to cause major accident - Hussey

Thursday, 13 July 2017

A STONE-throwing incident outside Castlederg on Thursday night last had the potential to cause a major accident, a local councillor claimed this week.

According to the PSNI in Strabane a young family was driving home around 10.30pm that night when a stone was thrown at their car on the Strabane Road close to the Pentecostal Church outside Castlederg.

"The stone shattered the driver's side window and left the family in shock and a one-year-old rear seat passenger hysterical. Thankfully everyone was okay, but the potential consequences of an incident like this leaves nothing to the imagination."

Derry City and Strabane district councillor, Alderman Derek Hussey, slammed the perpetrators of the incident describing it as a cowardly act.

"There is quite a lot of anger and dismay that this incident occurred to this family as they were driving along the Strabane Road. Thankfully no one was hurt, but obviously they have endured considerable trauma. I trust they can get over it. Nobody needs this type of dangerous and cowardly activity in our community and I would urge anyone with any knowledge to immediate contact local police who I understand are investigating the incident."

He added the stone-throwing had the potential to distract the driver and cause an even more serious incident," he said.

Police have appealed for any information about the incident to be directed to 101 and quote reference 1638 of 06/07/2017
