Great back nine wins it for Gary

Thursday, 6 July 2017

THE winner of Saturday's Devine Sand and Gravel Stableford competition at Strabane Golf Club was Gary King.

Gary was out in the very first four-ball of the day, and it looked like it could be one of those ordinary days when he reached the turn with 16 points on his card. But two successive birdies to begin the back nine moved him into contention and with only one poor hole at the 17th hole, Gary managed to accumulate 40 points, a total that wasn't bettered for the remainder of the day.

The runner-up, Ciaran Patton (20), was also playing in the same four-ball, and he scored 39 points, beating Hugo McCusker (12) who was third and James Harron (10) who finished fourth. James Bradley (18) took the final nett prize with 38 points. The gross prize winner was Patrick McCrossan(6) with 32 gross points. This week's over 60's winner was Paddy Doyle (17) with 36 points. Gerry Glover (16) won the first nine with Brian O'Kane (21) the back nine.

Sunday past saw the beginning of Open Week at the club with the traditional starter, the Frylite Open Teams competition, which was played in a champagne scramble format.

The winners were Ciaran Murphy, Ciaran Doherty, Paul Kavanagh and Seamus Flannagan with a total score of 100 points, two clear of the runners-up, Brian Brolly, Ronnie Wiley, John McMenamin and Mark Sharkey. In third, with 98 points, was Sean Elliot, Niall Coulter, Alan McGinley and Hugh McGinley. The best ladies team were Norma Brogan, Dympna Doherty, Adeline Gibson and Catherine Neeson with 89 points.

The nearest the pin was claimed by Paul McGill with Peter Doherty hitting the longest drive.

Last Thursday's competition was the annual Hugh Harley Memorial Cup and was won by early starter, Neil Conroy (10) with 39 points. The runner up was Paul Given (13), one point in arrears with 38 points, with Jordan Arthur (7) finishing in third with 36 points. Patrick McCrossan kept his great run going to secure yet another gross prize this time with 29 gross points.

Vice- Captain Frankie Houston's Donegal league team suffered a 3-2 reverse on Friday evening in their match with Cloughanneely from Falcarragh and will have it all to do in the away leg this coming Friday evening at the Donegal venue.
