Swifts far too good for Cliftonville
Thursday, 20 April 2017
Sion Swifts' first home game of the NIFL Danske Bank Premiership 2017/18 season will live long in the memory as they recorded an unforgettable 11-2 victory over Cliftonville.
Sion Swifts.... 11
Cliftonville ... 2
After an opening day defeat to title favourites, Linfield, Sion responded in perfect fashion.
The local side were ahead after only three minutes when Chloe McGlade netted from 18 yards.
One soon became two when Boyle Carr skipped by three challenges before curling the ball delightfully past McCleary.
Sion were three goals ahead on nine minutes when the ball fell to skipper McMullan who rifled into the top corner giving McCleary little chance in goal.
Cliftonville were dealt a further blow when the experienced Lauren Redpath left the field due to injury and soon after Swifts made it four with Boyle Carr again showing a maturity way beyond her tender years, beating two defenders to slip in Herrity who made no mistake from 12 yards.
Cliftonville responded when Northern Ireland senior captain, Callaghan, skipped by two Sion challenges to slip the ball under Mailey in the Sion goal.
Further Swifts pressure saw Crompton open her account for the season driving hard and low into the bottom corner.
On 36 minutes it was 6-1 to the Swifts when Herrity looking suspiciously offside controlled the ball and slipped it wide of the young Cliftonville netminder to increase her team's lead.
Again Boyle Carr was the architect jinking and ghosting past defenders and delivering an inch perfect ball for the on rushing McGlade to volley high into the roof of the net to leave the hosts 7-1 to the good at half-time.
The second period began with Swifts still on the front foot and on 50 minutes the goal of the game made it eight when Crompton fizzed a ball into Herrity's feet who played an exquisite first time ball around the corner for Boyle Carr to scamper down the channel and pull it back for Herrit who fired into the far top corner from 25 yards.
With the back four of Brogan, Connor, McCarter and Carlin dealing with the Cliftonville threat of Callaghan and Curtis it was no surprise when Swifts went further ahead when subsitute Harper fired powerfully across McCleary.
Falconer entered the fray for the outstanding 16-year-old Boyle Carr on 70 minutes and didn't take long to score her first goal in senior football when the the tireless McGlynn sent McGlade away down the left who picked out Harper in the box who played in Falconer to sweep in under the goalkeeper for number 10 for the Swifts. Callaghan got her second of the game for Cliftonville when racing clear to cooly round Mailey to slot into the empty net.
McGlade had the final say to complete her hat-trick cutting in from the right to fire home off her left to finish the scoring.
