THE North West Shotokan Karate Club (NWSKC), Strabane, got its competition season off to a winning start at the Irish International Karate Championships held in Ardee recently, producing a table topping performance.
This was a new competition for the North West students who adapted very quickly to the rules with each and every one giving a hundred percent.
The day started with kata and the club's first gold medal was won by Zara Thompson in the girls U8 kata section, followed by golds for Christian O'Brien-Irwin in the boys 11-14 years and Eathan O'Donnell in the senior male section.
Success in the kata sections continued with silver medals for James and Rebecca Burke, Elaine Dullaghan and Caitlin Sweeney with bronze medals claimed byLaura Browne and Stephen John Carlin.
The senior mixed team kata, which boasted an entry of a dozen teams, saw the male and female teams win their way through several tough rounds to meet in the final where the Male team of Stephen John Carlin, Eathan and Sloan O'Donnell won gold and the female team of Elaine Dullaghan, Laura Browne and Rebecca Burke claimed the silver.
The kumite categories brought more success as the North West competitors gave some splendid displays of skill, speed and accuracy. With every category keenly contested, none more so than the boys 10-11 years, where Christian O'Brien-Irwin and Joshua Thompson were drawn at opposite ends of the draw and after dismissing the opposition met in the final. In a closely fought encounter Christian won adding another gold to his tally with Joshua winning silver.
Lucas McColgan, despite winning his first round fight in the boys U8, was narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals and Oran Doherty, who was competing in one of the largest categories of the day, gave a good performance but failed to medal on this occasion.
As the children and cadet categories came to an end with winning silver and Rachel Carlin, Stephen John, Caitlin and Zaraall winning bronze, it was time for the senior members to step up to the plate.
The senior male up to fourth kyu was won by James Burke and the brown and black belt section was won by Sloan O'Donnell. In the female sections, Laura and Elaine won their respective brown and black belt categories adding four more gold medals to the ever increasing tally.
The last event of the day involved the senior male kumite team of Sloan, James and Gerard who won silver following a highly charged final. Head coach, Mandy McNulty, praised the students for their continued commitment and hard work and thanked the families who had travelled to support the team.
