St Columba’s PS awarded fifth Green Flag

Thursday, 30 March 2017

A LOCAL primary school is celebrating after being awarded its fifth Green Flag.

On Monday of last week (March 20), St Columba's PS in Clady was awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag by the environmental charity, 'Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful'.

The eco-assessors for St Columba's, Briege O'Neill and Lynn Greer, said they were very impressed with the school's eco-programme.

They agreed that there was a great pupil led atmosphere and involvement by wider school partners.

The assessors said: "The Eco-Committee is very enthusiastic and it is good to see the shared roles by adults and pupils.

"There is very good use of school grounds to enhance the environmental curriculum. There's a real proactive Eco-Schools' ethos."

The Eco-Schools Programme is the world's largest environmental education programme and aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school. It's participatory approach and combination of learning and action makes it an ideal way for schools to begin improving the environments of schools and their local communities.

Eco-Schools work through a simple seven-step process resulting in the programme becoming central to the school's ethos. Schools can choose from ten eco-topics ranging from litter and waste to energy, biodiversity and transport to name a few.

"The internationally recognised Green Flag is this highest award given to Eco-Schools and symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity," school principal, Colette Maguire said.

The International Eco-Schools Programme is operated in Northern Ireland by 'Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful' and is a free to enter programme. Visit www.eco-schoolsni.org for further information.
