“Denis’s Damsels” bring All-Ireland Shield to Donegal
Thursday, 16 February 2017
DENIS Doherty's Donegal Indoor Bowling Ladies team met with West Down Ladies in the final of the All-Ireland Ladies Shield and, despite some hiccups, cruised to a sixty-eight shots to forty-four shots win.
On mat one, Dorothy Montgomery, Ruby Graham, Mary McClintock and Margaret Montgomery were steady over the first five ends but conceded eleven shots over the final five to lose by nineteen shots to five shots.
On mat two, Phyllis Lyttle, Lila Finlay, Kathleen Duggan and Vera Patterson were leading by eight shots to three shots after five and went on to post a fifteen shots to four shots win.
On mat three, Jean Buchanan, Lisa O'Kane Donna Hegarty and Ruth Crawford were in rampant form, stretching their unbeaten record to fourteen games by posting twenty-three shots without reply.
This saw Donegal with a fairly substantial lead of twenty shots with the half time score forty-three shots to twenty-three shots in their favour.
After the interval, Donegal managed to keep the games tight, the heads well mixed and not give West Down the opportunity of sizeable counts. On mat one, Kathleen Lynch, Isobel Duncan, Pearl Bustard and Elizabeth Doherty had a nine shots to four shots victory.
On mat two, Barbara Aicken, Martina Brogan, Vanessa McHugh and Rachel McDonnell won by eight shots to seven shots and on mat three, Ann Hume, Sylvia Bell, Paula Friel and Audrey Gilfillan lost by ten shots to eight shots. An excellent team performance and a deserved win.
Denis thanked the ladies for their support during the campaign and hoped that they will be available to join him next season for further success.
