Thursday, 12 January 2017

POLICE in Strabane are appealing for information following a second serious assault in Strabane town centre within a matter of weeks.

The PSNI has confirmed an investigation has been launched this week after a man, aged 30, was assaulted in the vicinity of Abercorn Square.

He sustained serious head injuries after being set upon in the early hours of Sunday morning. The victim required hospital treatment for his injuries.

It's understood that a man in a blue-hooded top was seen running from the area and police are keen to speak with witnesses.

"Police are appealing for information regarding a male who was assaulted in Abercorn Square, Strabane, at approximately 2.25am on January 8, 2017.

"The male received serious head injuries which required hospital treatment," a PSNI spokesperson said yesterday (Tuesday).

The incident comes less than three weeks after a 23-year-old man was viciously assaulted in the same area.

Luke Beattie had part of his ear bitten off when he was attacked by two men on Christmas Eve and is facing reconstructive surgery.

He also sustained other injuries including an injury to his arm and a bite mark to his back as a result of the unprovoked attack.

Police say investigations are continuing and have urged anyone who may have information or who was in the area at the time of the attacks to come forward.

"We are appealing for anyone with information to contact police in Strabane on the 101 number. Information can also be passed anonymously via the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111," the PSNI spokesperson added.

Witnesses to the Christmas Eve assault are asked to quote reference number 129 of 24/12/16 and anyone with information on the weekend's assault are asked to quote crime reference number 163 of 8/1/17.
