Two ‘viable pipe bombs’ discovered near local housing estate thumbnailArmy bomb experts removing two viable pipe-bomb type devices following Friday's security alert in Springhill Park, Strabane.

TWO suspicious objects discovered near a local housing estate were viable pipe bombs, police have said.

A police cordon was thrown up in an area of Springhill Park in Strabane following the discovery of the items on Friday afternoon.

Army bomb officers were drafted in and subsequently declared the objects, located near a stepped area in the estate known locally as 'the Gap', as 'viable pipe bomb type devices'.

The devices were made safe before being removed by officers for further forensic examination.

Detective Inspector Jenna Fitzpatrick said: "This incident caused inconvenience and disruption for the local community and I would like to thank the members of the public for their patience and cooperation during the operation.

"An investigation is now underway to find those responsible for recklessly putting the lives of local people at risk by leaving these devices in a busy residential area."

Appealing for anyone with information to contact police, the detective added: "I would ask anyone with any information which could assist us with our enquiries to contact police in Strabane on 101 quoting reference number 412 25/11/16.

"Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Local Sinn Féin MLA., Michaela Boyle, condemned those responsible for causing the security alert.

She said: "These alerts do nothing for the image of Strabane. I am alarmed that such devices could be left in the close vicinity of a busy play park.

"Whoever is behind this alert needs to realise they do not represent the people of Strabane and stop these futile actions immediately."
