Newtownstewart pedestrian dies after collision

Thursday, 10 November 2016

A NEWTOWNSTEWART man who was involved in a road traffic collision last month has sadly passed away.

Eugene O'Brien, 44, was struck by a vehicle on the Strabane Road in the town on October 24. He had been on life support in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, but died on Monday.

No funeral arrangements had been confirmed at the time of going to press yesterday afternoon (Tuesday).

It is the second road tragedy for the family in recent weeks. Last month, Mr O'Brien's niece, Caoimhe O'Brien, was tragically killed in a collision outside Strabane.

Paying tribute to Mr O'Brien, Rev Roland Colhoun said: "It's not easy to take in the finality of death, especially the passing of a relatively young man.

"Eugene O'Brien overcame several serious illnesses in recent years and always faced the future with resilience and hope. We are mindful that the O'Brien family has had three sudden deaths in as many months.

"The family tearfully and prayerfully accepts each cross as it comes along and endeavours to lift the cross as they carry the coffins.

"With seven siblings and an extensive circle of relatives and friends, the grief is travelling far and wide.

"Our heartfelt sympathy and our daily prayers are with them all. May Eugene's soul rest in peace."

West Tyrone MLA., Daniel McCrossan said he was "deeply saddened" by the news.

"This is another very tragic and difficult loss for for the O'Brien family in such a short time.

"My prayers and sincere thoughts are with the entire O'Brien family circle, friends and wider community."

Meanwhile, police have appealed to anyone who was travelling on the Strabane Road, Newtownstewart, between 6.20pm and 6.35pm on Monday, October 24, and may have witnessed this incident which involved a black Vauxhall Vectra car to contact police at Strabane on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1099 24/10/16.
