BLUSH lingerie shop in Strabane is the latest local business in the town set to close its doors, it was confirmed this week.
Proprietor of the Castle Street shop, Helen Kerlin, confirmed the closure, stating that 'now was the right time to close' the premises after almost a year in business.
The 20-year-old cited the current economic downturn as one of the reasons for her decision to shut up shop for good, but added that despite the imminent closure, customers have not seen the last of the young entrepreneur.
Commenting on the forthcoming closure, she explained: "I took a year out from the job I held before here and the year is up now, so I have that to go back to now in March. It was a career break of sorts and when I started out, I said I would give it a year and if it was doing well, I would stay. It is doing well now, but it's just not well enough to remain open.
“I could easily persevere on for another six months, but I think Strabane will only get worse before it gets any better. I would rather leave at this stage - and maybe come back in a couple of years time. I'm still very young, so I have time on my side," smiled Helen.
Reflecting on 11 months in business, she added: "I've always wanted to open my own shop so I'm glad I took the career break and actually opened up. There's no competition in the town for this type of shop, so there is a niche market for a lingerie provider.
Roller-coaster
“It has been an experience and one that I have learned a lot from. It has been a roller-coaster as you have your quiet moments and then your hectic moments, but it has all been good.
“It was a difficult decison, but I hope I don't regret it. I honestly don't think I will though. I'm grateful that I have the chance to go back into my previous job - it would have been harder if that option wasn't there."
Continuing, Helen cited the change in spending habits - as well as high rates and rent prices - as the deciding factors in her decision to close.
“Quite simply there is no money out there now. People are just buying the basics and are not splashing out on luxuries because they can't afford it. There is no doubt that the economic climate is contributing to the number of shop closures elsewhere too.
“Customers are shocked and disappointed by my decision but the time is right and it is the right decision for me. I plan to go back to work, save and come back and do it all again maybe when the recession is over. I have told my customers that I will be back and they have assured me that they will come back with me, so that is nice to know."
Helen thanked her family, friends and loyal customers for all their support. "Thanks to everybody who has helped me in anyway. The support over this last year has been great and very much appreciated."
A closing down sale is now underway and Helen anticipates the official closure on Wednesday of next week. Customers with credit notes or gift vouchers are encouraged to make use of them as soon as possible.
