Alzheimer’s Society to hold special launch of its new Strabane service

Thursday, 19 January 2012

TO celebrate the opening of its Strabane service, the Alzheimer's Society is holding a launch event in the Fir Trees Hotel next month.
Fiona Brown, dementia support worker, said: "This is a very exciting time for people with dementia and their loved ones in the Strabane area. A diagnosis of dementia is daunting and people's lives often change dramatically. As a dementia support worker, my role is to support people from the early signs of dementia and through the journey. People generally learn to cope with changes and my job is to help them understand the diagnosis and offer services which will help them live well."
The launch is taking place on Thursday, February 23, from 7pm to 9pm. A light supper will be provided and popular Tyrone musician, Derick Mehaffey, will provide the entertainment.
If you would like to book a place, please contact Fiona in the Strabane office on 07715 800031.
The Alzheimer's Society is Tesco Charity of the Year. As a result of this partnership, funding has been made available to open this new office. It allows services to be made available to the people of Strabane on their doorstep, which was not previously possible.
The new office will be at the Strabane Enterprise Agency on the Orchard Road.
The Alzheimer's Society offers a number of services in the local area, including outreach visits and telephone support to provide people with dementia and their carers with a clearer understanding of dementia, emotional support and signposting, carer support groups, carer information sessions, home support service and advocacy for people with dementia. The helpline number is 0845 300 0336.
There are plans to open a Dementia Cafe in the Strabane area for people with dementia and their carers to come and spend time with peers in a relaxed environment. The Alzheimer's Society is in the process of recruiting volunteers to help us with this new service.
It also has volunteering opportunities for fundraising and awareness raising. If you are interested in volunteering for the society or finding out more, please contact Dubheasa on (028) 82240826.
“If you have been diagnosed with dementia, care for someone with dementia or would like to find out more about the services we offer you are more than welcome to come along to the launch at the Fir Trees Hotel next month," a spokesperson for the organisation said.
If you would like to book a place at the launch, make a referral or find out more about the services please contact Fiona on 07715 800031 or email: Fiona.brown@alzheimers.org.uk
