STRABANE District Council, in partnership with Volunteer Now, acknowledged the input older volunteers make in the community at a recent awards ceremony.
The district council developed a volunteer award scheme as part of the 'unlocking potential' project, which aims to celebrate the considerable contribution older volunteers make to the work of organisations and groups across the council area.
Brian McMahon, Strabane District Council's chairman, said: "Volunteers are part of all types of local initiatives - youth, community, special needs, health and sports, to name but a few.
“Volunteering provides a range of benefits. It provides the opportunity to help others, gain experience, improve career prospects and meet new people. People become involved in volunteering for a variety of reasons. It may be that they volunteer for a cause that is close to their heart, some people volunteer to stay fit and active, to pass on or learn new skills or simply to make new friends and have fun."
He added: "No matter what the reason, volunteering is a valuable resource in the community/voluntary sector and without this input many organisations may not be in existence today.
“You are an inspiration in terms of the time and commitment you have personally given to local groups. I commend each and every one of you from Strabane District Council and I personally thank you for your ongoing contribution to volunteering in this district."
