5 holiday suggestions for spring

Tuesday, 6 December 2011

When it comes to holidays, there are several varieties to choose from and schools of thought to follow. Of course, for many, when you go is dictated by work and, for everyone, where you go is dictated by income. There are, however, ways of cutting the cost of your holiday, and taking it at different, perhaps slightly unusual, times of year will allow your budget to stretch further. Spring is one such season where many a bargain can be found. Here are five suggestions of top places to go in the coming months.

1. Orlando, Florida

The sunny buckle on the belt of the infamous state, Orlando has been a staple in the upper echelons of dream holiday lists for what seems like an eternity. Attracting almost 43 million visitors each year, it's the destination to suit all tastes. With the weather rarely anything worse than pleasurably mild, the stunning natural lakes and forestry can be enjoyed all year round.

Of course, the main attraction is probably Walt Disney World Resort, virtually a town in its own right with impressive hotels, some of the very best restaurants, a sports complex and a choice of water parks. Elsewhere, SeaWorld is another must-visit attraction, particularly because of the chance to swim with dolphins in the Discovery Cave. Suitable for thrill seekers as well as budding marine biologists, the park also boasts a number of ferocious rollercoasters.

2. Barbados

As mentioned, holidaying out of peak season presents an opportunity to get more for your money than might otherwise be possible. Therefore, why not look for the very best and experience the holiday of a lifetime. In this regard, it's nigh on impossible to beat Barbados.

A tropical slice of the Caribbean, the island retains an air of creature comforts from its days as a British colony - afternoon tea is still served in hotels. For many, Barbados has always been, and will continue to forever be, about the beaches. Glorious white sands stretch for miles of tranquil perfection.

3. Paphos, Cyprus

For something a little left-field, try the relatively unknown Cypriot town of Paphos. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the smallest of Cyprus' major towns is a place of intriguing extremes. A quaint fishing harbour and awe-inspiring archaeological sights sit alongside modern shops and a dazzling array of vibrant pubs and bars.

4. Chamonix, France

If adventure is more your thing, and you don't mind the cold, then a swift skiing break could be just the tonic for you and your family, friends or loved one this spring. With the stunning backdrop of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest peak, looming large, Chamonix is essentially one giant snowy playground.

The six ski areas cater for all abilities and preferences while the charming cafés provide the perfect place to unwind after a hard day on the slopes. Get stuck in among 250 years of mountaineering history with visitors from all over the globe for a truly unforgettable experience.

5. Costa del Sol, Spain

Overwhelmingly popular with tourists for a number of years, this famous region has somehow maintained elements of surprising diversity and some quintessentially Spanish highlights in among all the modern trappings of a top holiday resort.

The main city, Malaga, plays host to the fascinating Museo Picasso. Opened in October 2003, the museum offers far more than just works by the notorious abstract painter. Over 204 original works are on display, including oil paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and sketchpads.

As you'd expect, Costa del Sol boasts a vibrant and bustling night life. Puerto Deportivo is particularly popular but there is no shortage of places to let your hair down and dance the night away.
